It’s beautiful weather but very windy (so not great weather for fishing) but we got a bit of breakfast from the shop this morning and met up with Mitchell (our ghillie) at 9 am.
Mitchell was great and brought along his collie, Ghillie, who was very good company.
We got to a small loch at the base of Storr, walked out across the bog to the bank, and found a place that was a bit out of the wind (it was biting cold…).
Mitchell gave us some good direction and had us practice with a bit of wool before tying on the actual flies (so we wouldn’t hook anything while we were getting a feel for things). Dad remembered how to do it very quickly and I managed to work it out after a few tries. We fished for a bit before Mitchell made us some tea to warm up our hands and we took a break for a bit.
We got in another few rounds before our fingers (and toes) froze up and we decided to call it a day a bit early and headed back to Portree. We changed clothes, made dinner reservations (something we have discovered is REQUIRED if you want to be able to eat dinner), and went to grab a bite to eat for lunch at the cafe across the street. It was a church before it was a very cute cafe.
After lunch we drove to the other side of the island to Dunvegan Castle to see the castle and gardens. It’s a beautiful, very well preserved estate with gorgeous gardens that we had a lot of fun exploring. On the drive back we got to admire the pretty white houses with dark roofs that dot the hills and valleys on Skye. And so many sheep!
By the time we got back to Portree around 4 pm I was completely wiped out. Our dinner reservation was at 5:30 so we had some time to crash and take a nap before dinner. For dinner I had made a reservation at Cuchullin, a few blocks from our hotel, and we got there right as they opened for dinner service and got seated.
The drinks were awesome, the food was amazing (Dad got steak and I got salmon), and Dad and I even got sticky toffee pudding and ice cream for dessert. All of it was great and we made sure to make a note for any future visits.
We had finished dinner by 6:30 so we got back to the hotel and decided to watch a bit of TV and crash for the night. Shivering while fly fishing takes it out of you!
